If you've got a heaping helping of ganja but nothing to smoke it out of, fear not. Pipes are one of simplest inventions on the face of the planet and can be made out of anything. Like most fun activities, it's just a matter of air and holes.
We know you’re probably in a hurry if you searched for DIY pipe methods, so let’s get right into it.
Apple
Probably the most iconic DIY pipe method is an apple. So famous is the apple as a makeshift pipe that pretty much everybody has a story or two about using one.
They're fun, easy to make, and even give you a little zesty apple flavor.
What you need:
- Apple
- Knife, screwdriver, car keys, or anything that can poke a hole
Step 1: Get an apple
To start, you’ll need a ripe apple, but preferably not one that’s old and all mushy. You need it to be able to take the heat and the smoke. You’ll also need something to carve a hole like a screwdriver or a knife.
Step 2: Twist off the stem
Twisting off the stem to make a natural bowl on the top of the apple.
Step 3: Poke a hole in the top
Using a knife, screwdriver, car keys, whatever you got-- poke a hole through the top of the apple where the stem used to be and push it to the center.
Step 4: Poke a hole in the side
Poke another hole in the side of the apple. This will be your mouthpiece. Connect it to the first hole to form an L shaped tunnel.
If you want a carb hole, push the mouthpiece hole all the way through to the other side.
Step 5: Fill the top with dry herb and enjoy
The apple method can also be applied to other fruits and vegetables like potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, zucchini-- anything that will allow you to form the L shaped airpath.
Soda Can
Another iconic homemade pipe is one made with an empty can. This classic handmade pipe was surely invented at a college party where there’s no shortage of cans, but you’ll easily find supplies at home even if you aren’t a party person.
To make a soda can pipe, you need a soda can and an instrument to poke a hole through it (knife, screwdriver, car keys).
Step 1: Poke a hole in the side of the can
Poke a hole in the side of the can near the bottom.
Step 2: Dent or pinch the can around the hole
It doesn't have to be a work of art, it just needs to be able to hold ground dry herb in a sort of basin. This will be your bowl.
Step 3: Poke a hole on the other side
This second hole will be your mouthpiece.
Toilet Paper Roll
If there’s something we all have lying around our house, it’s toilet paper. And stoners are well known for using the leftover rolls for a number of tasks, like making a sploof when they want to hide the smell of weed.
All you need for this powerful DIY steamroller is an empty toilet paper roll (or paper towel roll).
Step 1: Make a hole in the cardboard
The hole should be positioned about 1/4 of the length up the roll.
Step 2: Mold your aluminum foil bowl
Form a piece of aluminum foil into a cone/bowl shape. Poke a few tiny holes at the bottom, and place this in the hole of the roll.
Step 3: Flatten the foil around the edges
You want to make sure you're not going to set the toilet paper roll on fire-- so once the bowl is positioned inside the hole, flatten the foil around the exposed cardboard to make sure you can light it without setting your face on fire.
Step 4: Fill with herbs
Step 5: Light it up
Using one end of the roll as your mouthpiece, cover the other end with your hand as you light the bowl. This will fill the interior with smoke.
Then, quickly take your hand off and inhale.
Ice Block Pipe
Ice block pipe requires a bit more time and effort than our other ideas, especially if you don’t have a mold. But we think it’s still worth a try.
To make this pipe, choose a long and narrow container, fill it with water and place in freezer. Then wait until it turns into a block of ice.
Once you have your block of ice, carefully carve a hole in one end for the mouthpiece and stem and connect it with a hole on top to make a bowl, in an L shape. Put a tinfoil in the bowl hole like with the previous pipe, or fill it directly with herbs. Fire it up and enjoy a smooth and cool hit.
If you feel a bit insecure with this one, just freeze a couple of blocks so you have room for error.
The Tic-Tac Bong
Technically a water pipe, the Tic-Tac bong is super tiny, so we think it should still be on this list. This perfect on-the-go homemade pipe is easy to make, and you only need an empty tic-tac box.
Once you have your box, poke a hole in one side and insert a thin tube (like a straw). Make a cone-shaped bowl by molding a piece of aluminum foil and place it in your tube.
Then fill the box with water and the bowl with herbs. Fire it up and inhale through the opening. This method is great if you like small but potent hits.
Pen
A pen pipe is discreet, but a bit convoluted compared to the other methods. If you have plenty of pens around but no cans or fruit (maybe you are at a pen convention in Australia and had all your fruit confiscated at the border due to their strict regulations on transporting produce), this method can work if necessary.
Step 1: Get a good pen
You need a pen that can be easily dissembled and preferably doesn't have a plastic top.
Step 2: Take out the ink tube
Now all you've got is the pen cone.
Step 3: Put the tip of the pen back in the opposite direction
Put the tip back the opposite way it usually fits. The tip will create a v-shaped bowl. Fill it with cannabis, light up and inhale from the back side.
