How to Hide the Smell of Weed

Posted by Smoke Cartel on

Everybody who's cool can recognize the smell of cannabis almost instantly. But, it's not always welcome in every situation. Worrying about leaving the easily recognizable scent behind can prevent you from enjoying the experience to the fullest. Whether you’re smoking in a dorm room and don't want to get expelled, an apartment and need your security deposit, or your family estate and need your inheritance money-- there are steps you can take to ensure your ass isn't grass.

We've rounded up some of the best DIY ways you can hide the scent, so you can enjoy a worry-free session - with no sign left behind.

First, though, let's talk about how you could hypothetically eliminate a different strong odor that's not cannabis-- like tobacco. Or lemongrass. Or... I don't know. Something else.

Ozium

(Not for Weed)

Ozium is the OG. You've probably heard of it before-- it's become a nearly ubiquitous household name for being a superior odor remover, so we'd be remiss for not including on this list-- the part of the list that's not for weed, obviously. We don't sell products that are for weed.

Light an Odor Eliminating Candle

(Not for Weed)

Do you want to vibe while you're smoking... uh, lemongrass? Then an odor-eliminating candle is perfect.

Set the mood and send the smell running. Just don't set your house on fire. These are a good alternative to the infamous incense stick trick. Everybody's onto that, anyway. What are you, a cop?

Prevent the Smell With Good Ventilation

This tip may sound too simple, but we can’t skip mentioning that prevention is better than any hiding trick.

If you’re smoking in your room, crack open all windows, turn on a fan. Instead of trying to hide the smell, you’ll prevent it from happening in the first place. Many people remember how they smoked out of a window as teens, and this cheap and simple trick still works.

However, it can get too chilly outside to do that. If that’s the case, go for the old “Hawaiian Hotbox” method, or simply put - smoke in the bathroom, turn on the fan and the shower. The steam will suck into your fan, and won’t leave any smoke behind. Make sure you put a towel under the door to prevent smoke from escaping, and try not relying on this method as it is quite wasteful.

Make a Sploof

A sploof, also known as doob tube is one of the oldest tricks to hide weed smell.

This DIY smoke filter is easy to make and requires things you already have at home - a toilet roll tube, dryer sheets or socks and an elastic sock to hold it all together.

Once you’ve gathered all components, simply attach your chosen fabric onto one end of the tube and tie it with the elastic band. Then exhale your smoke into the other end, and the fabric will filter the smoke.

Though it may not completely omit the smell, this makeshift smoke filter will definitely reduce it while also preventing you from hot boxing your room.

If you’re feeling particularly lazy, you can just grab a bottle and exhale smoke in it, and screw on the cap. However, a small bottle may quickly fill up so make sure you have a big one, or a couple of them at hand.

Incense Sticks or Candles

This one may seem cliché or obvious, but if you have some incense sticks or candles lying around, you can definitely make use of them. Essential oils are also awesome, and some people even heat them up in the microwave instead of using a burner because they release the scent quicker.

These options work for obvious reasons - by having an even stronger scent, they overpower the smell of weed. They’ll not omit the smell or the smoke, but they’ll do a good job in covering it up.

When using any of these aromatic tools, pick stronger scents and light them up before you hit your bowl or joint.

Cook Aromatic Food

If you don’t have any candles or incenses, there’s another way to replace one odor with another to cover it up - cooking a tasty meal.

To make this trick work, go for meals that take longer to cook - at least as long as you’re smoking your herbs. Also, a simple dish like macaroni and cheese won’t work, go for something with tons of herbs and spices, and include garlic and onions. Grilled food also has a strong scent as well as popcorn - especially if slightly burned.

What makes this idea great is that you’ll also have a delicious meal to enjoy when you start getting the munchies.

Try Activated Charcoal

It’s no wonder why many store-bought smell proof solutions utilize activated charcoal - it is one of the best methods to hide any smell you don’t want to leave behind.

Activated charcoal absorbs toxins and particles out of the air, so it doesn’t just cover the smell - it actually omits it completely. The great thing about this method is that you can use it in many ways - put it in your sploof, add it to your stash jar or apply it to your curtains and bed - it’ll quickly rid you of any lingering smell.

If you don’t have charcoal, try applying vinegar to some surfaces instead, or boil a cup in a saucepan. The smell will quickly spread throughout your room. Though it’s unpleasant, it’ll disappear within an hour, taking the cannabis smell with it.
